Sammons Golf Course Named "Most Improved" By Golf Advisor

It’s no secret to golfers in Central Texas, but now Sammons Golf Course is being recognized nationwide, after making the list of Golf Advisor’s “Most Improved” courses in 2019. Sammons, owned by the City of Temple and managed by the city’s award-winning Parks & Recreation Department, snagged the #23 spot on the “Most Improved” list, which included golf courses in Florida, California and Hawaii.
Golf Advisor based its rankings off actual user reviews submitted to their website, which overwhelmingly pointed to the City of Temple’s recent greens renovation in 2018 as the reason for the drastic improvement in their golfing experience at Sammons. The six-month greens resurfacing project improved drainage along the entire course and provided new putting greens with Mini Verde grass, designed to give players a better putting surface throughout the year.  The City of Temple also built two new green complexes and rearranged the order of the course for a better golfing experience.
“We are honored to make Golf Advisor’s “Most Improved” courses list and be nationally recognized for the services we are providing to Temple’s residents and visitors,” said Jeff Ward, Director of Golf for the City of Temple. “Increasing the number of golfers of all ages in our area and making golf accessible to all players continues to be our main objective.”
The history of Sammons Golf Course dates back to 1922, when Lake Polk Golf and Country Club opened on the site.  In the 1950’s, a second 9 holes were added, and the name changed to Temple Country Club.  The name Sammons Golf Course came in the 1980’s with the completion of the redesign project by John Sammons, former Mayor of Temple.  The City took over the operation of the golf course in 2005.
