Summer Employment Opportunities

The Temple Parks and Leisure Services Department is in need of summer staff to work in the parks and at the swimming pools.

“We are looking to fill 123 positions: camp counselors, lifeguards, pool managers, cashiers, beverage cart attendants at the golf course, and more.” said Recreation Superintendent Chuck Ramm. “These jobs offer valuable work experience in a fun environment as well as a source of income.”

The beauty of these summer positions with Parks and Leisure Services is that they do not require a wealth of previous experience. “While we would prefer applicants who have previous experience working with children, we offer all of the training you need,” said Robert “Peanut” Henderson. “We will teach you everything you need to know to be a counselor, lifeguard, cashier, or role model. The only thing we ask is that you have a willingness to learn and have a positive attitude.”

Summer camps offer a great opportunity for those that enjoy working with kids. “The employees that I am looking for are energetic, creative, and enjoy working as a team,” said Henderson. “Working with children can be challenging, but it is definitely a very rewarding experience.”

Camp counselors will also find themselves assigned to a wide variety of camps, based on their preferences, passions, and skills. “We match individual talents and personalities with their ideal camp. If you are artsy, we have an arts and craft camp. If you are really into the outdoors, we have our awesome adventure camp,” said Henderson.

Lifeguards and other pool staff positions are needed at five locations over the summer season: Lions Junction Family Water Park, Walker Pool, Clark Pool, Sammons Indoor Pool, and the pool at the Summit Fitness Center.

“As a lifeguard you have an opportunity to provide a safe place for thousands of children and their families, and for many of these kids going to the pool is the highlight of their entire summer,” said Aquatics Coordinator Keith Dawson. “What I’m looking for in a potential guard is someone who is responsible, a team player, and has really good people skills.”

“Certain positions may require different levels of certification, such as lifeguards or water safety instructors, so we work with the interested applicants to get them certified before the beginning of the season,” continued Dawson. “If you enjoy the water park or pools, but don’t want to be a lifeguard, we have positions available in our concession stand selling food or working as cashiers.”

Another option is beverage cart attendants for the golf course. This would be ideal for those that enjoy being outdoors, are social, and enjoy the game of golf. In addition, cart attendants have the ability to earn extra money by receiving tips for the service they provide.

Applications for all summer jobs are available at the City’s Human Resource office in the Municipal Building (2 North Main Street, Suite 209). They are also available online from the City’s website: www.templetx.gov/jobs
