City of Temple Announces Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative

The City of Temple is pleased to announce a new Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative. The goal of this new program is to build healthy, safe, and vibrant neighborhoods using approaches that foster the long-term, positive, and sustainable changes necessary for Temple to remain a place of choice to live, work, and play.

“This is an exciting time to live and work in Temple. Our community is growing and thriving. However, deteriorating conditions in certain areas of our community continues to be a critical issue for our City and is an issue that has a significant impact on the health and safety of our neighborhoods. The complexity and scale of this issue requires the City to expand its traditional view of code enforcement and take a comprehensive approach to neighborhood revitalization” states Brynn Myers, Assistant City Manager.

As part of the implementation of the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative, the current Code Enforcement Division will be restructured. As part of this restructure, a Compliance Team will be added to the City’s Transform Temple Division. This team is tasked with monitoring the condition of properties and structures within the City for compliance with City ordinances in order to protect the health and safety of the residents of the City of Temple and to foster neighborhood revitalization. The Transform Temple Compliance Team will work closely with the City’s Office of Community Development to develop, coordinate, and implement innovative strategies to achieve code compliance.

Also as part of the new program, additional positions have been added to the Office of Community Development in order to coordinate the development and implementation of the City’s Neighborhood Revitalization Plan. These position will assist in planning, implementing, and evaluating a variety of neighborhood and housing revitalization programs. These positions are also responsible for building, organizing, and developing an engaged citizen and volunteer base within the community.

The Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative is intended to provide an integrated approach to community redevelopment by 1) actively engaging residents of our neighborhoods; 2) building connections between our Code Compliance and Community Development programs; and 3) collaborating with our many community partners.

“An important component of this initiative is the development of a new Neighborhood Revitalization Master Plan. The development of this plan will be coordinated with our citizens, as well as our many community partners, and will begin in the early part of 2017,” says Myers.

Myers continues, “I am incredibly excited to help lead this new program. I feel it will make a tremendous positive impact on our community and I look forward to working with our team and partners as we move forward.”
