Green Oaks to Receive Historic Marker

Wednesday, December 4

Green Oaks Farm Temple Historic Marker Dedication.

(Temple)- The Temple Historic Preservation Committee will hold a reception honoring Green Oaks Farm as the latest recipient of a Temple Historic Marker. The reception will be held Wednesday, December 4, 2013, at 1:00 p.m., at Green Oaks Farm located at 5880 Hartrick Bluff Temple TX.

The Historic Green Oaks Farm is part of the Maximo Moreno Eleven League Land Grant of 1834. Pioneers, Moses and Barzilla Griffin received land from the grant. The farm became a local point for area settlers, with natural spring water provided by Friar’s Creek. The farm served as the site for the Mount Vernon School which was destroyed by a tornado in the late 1800’s, a wagon trail where soldiers from the Battle of Bird Creek travelled on the way back to Fort Griffin and the community of Echo was developed on the Northeastern edge. The farm stayed in the Griffin Family for 100 years. In 1931, the name was changed from Griffin Place to Green Oaks Farm after the beautiful ancient Oak Trees that are found along the property. On August 5th 2010 Green Oaks Farm received a marker from the Texas Historical Commission.

The Historic Marker Program was designed to recognize historically significant structures within the city, while encouraging preservation and restoration. In order for a property to be considered for a Temple Historic Marker, the property owner must fill out an application and submit it with supporting documentation to the Historic Preservation Committee. There is a small application fee, which is currently half off for the summer months. After an application is submitted the committee will review the pending application and make a decision.

Anyone interested in learning more about Green Oaks or the Temple Historic Marker Program is encouraged to attend. Please RSVP by calling the Temple Visitor Center at 298-5900.
