Swing Time Big Band Dance
Friday, May 30, 2014
Classic big band music and a dance floor! Join the Swing Time Big Band for an evening of jump, swing, and decades-spanning pop hits.
The sounds of sultry saxophones, sliding trombones and wailing trumpets will fill Temple's Cultural Activities Center Friday, May 30, when Swingtime Big Band plays a return engagement at the center's Strasburger Hall.
"This performance is a combination dance and concert," said Jane Boone, CAC marketing director, "with plenty of tables and chairs set up around the perimeter of the ballroom." The event is billed as a family-friendly evening, with a special area roped off for a kids' dance floor. "We had a big turnout for Swingtime's first show in early April, with lots of families and folks of all ages attending."
The 16-piece orchestra performs hits from the 1940s to present day, according to bandleader Steve Pettit. "We play original pieces by Glenn Miller, Harry James, Count Basie - all the way to present day tunes by Carole King and Stevie Wonder. It's a hit parade across the decades."
Revenue from tickets and refreshment sales are designated as a fundraiser, Boone said. "We use this money for educational music programs," she noted - a constant challenge for the nonprofit center. "Bottled water and soft drinks will be available to purchase, or you may bring your own."
Swingtime Big Band is made up of music educators, full and part time professional musicians and has performed extensively in the central Texas area. "We've played from Waco to Georgetown and from Temple to Copperas Cove," Pettit said. "But with the CAC's acoustics, huge dance floor, theater-style lighting and the enthusiastic audiences - it's got to be our favorite venue."
Keely Allison, from Austin, handles the vocals, which range from the Doris Day/Les Brown million-seller "Sentimental Journey" to "So Very Hard To Go" by Tower of Power. "We include a few numbers that showcase the outstanding instrumentalists in the band," Pettit noted. "The Woody Herman classic, 'Woodchopper's Ball', gives everybody a chance to show their jazz chops."
With a full calendar of country, folk and Tejano musical acts posted on the CAC's website, the Swingtime show at the CAC is a bit of a departure. "It's just exciting to hear this great music performed live with all of the emotion and power," Boone said.
Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door for adults, $2 for children. Swingtime Big Band performs from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Friday, May 30 at the Cultural Activities Center, 3011 N. Third St., Temple 76501. Call 254-773-9926 or
