Recycling Tips and Acceptable Items

There are many items that are not accepted in the city's curbside recycling program. There are several reasons for this.
  • The main reason is safety. We are concerned about the safety of our drivers as well as the safety of those working the recycling facility.
  • Another reason is some items can be recycled, just not curbside. See below for the many opportunities to recycle items not accepted in our curbside recycling program.
Alternatives to Curbside Recycling
  • Aerosol Cans - The city holds an annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day in October.
  • Antifreeze - The city holds an annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day in October.
  • Batteries - Batteries Plus located at 3550 South General Bruce Drive in Temple will accept batteries for recycling.
  • Clothing - Consignment and secondhand stores along with various charities will accept clothing.
  • Coat Hangers (wire) - Many dry cleaner facilities will accept these.
  • Electronics - Electronics are usually collected during the HHW event or other special events.
  • Glass - Clear and brown glass only can be taken to either recycle drop-off center.
  • Light Bulbs - Home improvement stores typically recycle light bulbs.
  • Metal - Local scrap metal facilities such as Temple Iron and Metal accept metal items.
  • Motor Oil/Filters - These can be brought to the Solid Waste Services office throughout the year or to the city's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day in October.
  • Paint Cans -The city holds an annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Day in October.
  • Plastic Shopping Bags - These can be recycled at many local stores accepting plastic bags.
  • Packing Peanuts - Many packing stores will accept these items.
  • Tires - The city holds an annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Day in October.
  • Toys - Consignment and secondhand stores along with various charities will accept toys.
  • Yard Waste - 6 cubic yards of brush can be placed at the front curb. Grass and leaves can be recycled on your yard or can be bagged and placed at the curb for bulk pick up.
