Whether you come to Sammons Community Center for a special event, educational or health seminar, or an ongoing program such as the ones listed below, you are always welcome!

Membership is only $5 per year for Temple residents and $8 for non-Temple residents.

Pez's Passport Pals Daytrips
Age: Adults & Senior Adults
Go! See! Do! Jump on the bus with us for one of our exciting monthly excursions. All trips depart from and return to Sammons Community Center. Our trips fill up quickly; don’t hesitate, call today to reserve your spot. The price of lunch is on your own for all trips. Please note that these are daytime excursions and a moderate amount of walking and/or climbing is necessary.

Zumba Gold®
Age: Adults & Senior Adults
Start your new year off with this zany fitness craze! Zumba Gold fitness uses upbeat Latin music together with cardiovascular exercise to create fun aerobic dance. The traditional Zumba formula is modified, adapting the dance moves and the pace to suit the needs of the active, older participant; as well as those just starting their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle. With easy-to-follow moves and an invigorating, party-like atmosphere it’s the perfect exercise program for all; chair-friendly for those who have physical limitations. Instructors: Certified Zumba Gold Instructors, Jeanette Free and Naomi Kuhn.

Fitness for Life
Age: Adults & Senior Adults
Begin the new year with new goals: Get Fit and Stay Fit! Lace up your tennis shoes and join our energized instructor in this low-impact, strengthening and aerobic program designed to improve balance, flexibility, coordination and range of motion. Exercise using light hand weights and elastic bands. Exercising with friends is so much easier. Adaptable for all levels of mobility. Instructor: Sheri Joseph

Soft & Seated Yoga
Age: Adults & Senior Adults
Start today! Achieve enormous physical and mental benefits from simple, functional and easy-to-follow movements from the comfort of a chair in a soothing atmosphere. Improve your balance, range of motion, strength, flexibility and joint mobility while keeping your mind active and alert. Instructor: Certified Senior Yoga Instructor, Janelle Novosad.


Dancing With the Starz Ballroom Dancing
Age: Adluts & Senior Adults
Shall we dance? Couples can experience ballroom dance from the very beginning steps to more advanced steps including Latin, swing and a variety of other ballroom dance steps. Although it may be cold outside, you can put some of your warm memories on paper. Explore writing as a craft and art form, while focusing on your own writing. Enroll in this unstructured writing course to fine tune your writing skills and satisfy your desire to put your thoughts and dreams onto paper. Sweatin’ With the Oldies
Age: 50 & Up
Stay stronger longer! This on-going class is made to order for those in the older crowd wishing to maintain a healthy lifestyle and meet new people in a positive, fun atmosphere. Our instructors are experienced in leading safe, graduated stretching movements while seated or standing. These classes are aimed at gently toning muscles, increasing flexibility, mobility and range of motion; while enjoying the company of friends and the fun of oldies-but-goldies tunes.

Country & Western Dances
Age: 50 & Up
Howdy y’all! Come scoot your boots or tap your feet to the great music of local country and western bands on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month. For each dance, you are encouraged to bring a favorite finger food to share and we will provide the coffee, water and punch for intermission. Door prizes are awarded at each dance. 2nd and 4th Th Monthly 6:30-9:30 p.m. $4 each at the door. Bands for 2012 include: Shory Grisham and Friends, Jerry Haisler and Melody 5 and Larry Burgin and the Texas Tradition.

Sammons Soil Sisters
Age: Adults & Senior Adults
Spring is returning and so are the gardeners. Get your hands dirty and join this group of dedicated gardeners and garden enthusiasts, who gather and bloom the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month. Spend time discussing gardening techniques, trading seeds and tending plants, while sharing ideas and laughter. Instructor: Judy Pelzel

Painting and Drawing
Age 50 & Up
Start a new hobby with the start of a new year. Grab your brushes! This ever-popular art class is designed to teach students of all levels who wish to learn to paint and draw or just want to increase their skill levels. Individual instructions based upon skill levels. No previous experience is necessary. Instructor: Barbara Wilson

Quilting for Fun
Age: Adults & Senior Adults
Remember the beautiful quilts that your grandmother made? Let’s revitalize a dying art and preserve our heritage. Now you can learn the basics of tools of the trade and patterns in this homespun stitching class to create a cherished heirloom for your grandkids. Bring your own supplies and projects; and also join stitches in a group project for charity. Instructor: Maria Villela.

Brown Bag Bingo Nights

Age: 50 & Up
BINGO! The first Thursday evening of each month you will hear echoing from the Center that familiar sound.

Bring a brown bag with a small, new bingo prize in it (no food items, please). That is your admission to a fun-filled evening playing bingo and visiting with old friends. Upon completion of the games, a light supper will be provided to those in attendance.

Third Thursday Tricks and Trumps
Age: 50 & Up
Shuffle and shake! Join us every third Thursday of the month for game night. Cards, dominoes, 42 dominoes, checkers, billiards, and board games will be available. You are welcomed to bring a light finger food to share; we will provide cold drinks and coffee. Bring a friend or meet new ones, plenty of fun and laughter for all!

Games Galore

Sammons Community Center is the sites for senior adults looking to have some fun, laughter and challenges. These activities will not only help keep your pencils sharp but your brains as well!

Our game rooms are always open daily for unorganized play, but stop by for some organized activities, free of charge, on the following days:

Circle of Friends-crocheting Group
Age: Adults & Senior Adults
Warmth abounds, not only from the brightly-colored crocheted blankets, but from the hearts of this unique group. This circle of friends meets once a week to create beautiful, hand-made, crocheted items which are then donated to local nursing homes and assisted living facilities. You are invited to share their laughter and talents; basic to moderate crocheting skills are helpful, but not required. Use our supplies or bring your own, we have limited yarn so donations are always welcomed.
